Parameterise the Data You Entered
-
If you followed the instructions during the recording part of this tutorial, you will have entered some data using the keyboard as part of your User Journey.
-
We will now proceed to parameterise the data you entered with values contained within a simple text file.
Data File
-
We need to create a file that contains the values for the parameter.
-
Create a simple text file and enter, on separate lines in the file, values that are valid to be entered into the field within the User Journey.
- For example, if your field is the search terms for a bookstore application, you file contents could look like this:
Decorating
Windows 7
Gardening
…
…
- Save the file and make a note of its location.
Locate the step to parameterise
-
To find the step containing the value you entered during the recording, select the User Journey in the navigation tree, right-click and choose “Search / Replace”.
-
This will open the Search / Replace dialogue which will allow you to find the value you entered – matching steps will be highlighted in the navigation tree if you choose the "Find All" option.
- Once the step has been found, close the dialogue and select the step to see its properties.
Run the Dynamic Data wizard
-
Locate the value you entered during the recording in the properties panel, highlight it (be careful to highlight no extra characters), right-click, and choose “Convert to Dynamic Data”.
-
Again watch the offered “Adding Parameters” video and then proceed to configure the parameter to read data from the first column of your text file, serve the data in a random order, and share the file between all simulated users. A new value should be used from the file every time the step is executed.
-
Remember that you can click the “More Details” button on the wizard screens at any stage to receive help on that particular screen.
- If your data file was called c:\data.txt, your wizard screens should look like those shown below.
