Using Application Response Values as Parameters
Introduction
-
A common requirement is to supply a value in a request that was returned by the application in a previous response.
Examples include:
- selecting an item to view from a set of search results
- choosing a value from a drop-down list
- clicking a link on a page from a selection of links (each link ultimately showing different data)
-
The Response Dynamic Data type allows any part of an application response to be selected to be used in a subsequent request.
-
If you followed the instructions correctly when you recorded your User Journey, you should have at some point selected from a set of options presented by your application (e.g. selected an item to view from a set of search results).
Configuring Response Dynamic Data
-
If you have not already watched the video on this page, use the Help -> Tutorials (online) menu option to display a list of the current set of video tutorials and select the “Response Dynamic Data” video.
-
Again, you will need to locate the data value you wish to replace in the User Journey. This can take a few minutes; just because you clicked a link with a certain visible name, it does not mean the name was sent to the server (the name you selected could have an associated identifier that was used instead).
-
It is usual that the step whose response shows the result of the selection in the browser is the one that contains the parameter. However, in rare circumstances, you may need to inspect a few steps to see where this data is sent. Of course, if you can talk with the application developers, they will be able to tell you how the data is sent to the application.
-
As the operation of selecting values from application responses and sending them in requests can seem complex the first few times you perform it, we recommend you open the video tutorial on this page and watch a stage, pause the video, perform the work in StressTester™ and then continue until you have finished your configuration.
- As always, if you cannot work out how to configure your Response Dynamic Data item, do not hesitate to contact our Support team.
