StressTester™ Learning Center - Sleep Time Fields

» Tutorials » Setting Sleep Times » Sleep Time Fields

  • There are two screens used to specify the sleep times and how they should be randomised.

  • On every step’s properties screen, the Sleep Time field allows the simulated users’ thinking and data entry time (before the application request is made) to be specified in milliseconds.

  • On the User Journey’s properties screen, there are four relevant fields:

The Initial Sleep Time field specifies the time in milliseconds that StressTester™ should wait before the User Journey starts for a simulated user.  This is used when there is a need to cause certain User Journeys to start after others.  It is usually set to 0 which means that User Journey should start when the performance test starts.

The Cycle End Sleep Time field specifies the time in milliseconds that a simulated user pauses at the end of a User Journey iteration, before commencing the next iteration.

The Sleep Time Multiplier field specifies a value that StressTester™ should multiply all sleep times against, in order to work out the sleep time to use.  Setting this field to 0.5 halves specified sleep times, and hence the User Journey runs faster (presuming the application can take requests at the new speed).  Setting the field above 1 slows down the rate of requests.

Finally, the Sleep Time Variation field specifies how StressTester™ should randomise calculated sleep times.  The value in this field is a percentage and StressTester™ will create a random value plus or minus this percentage of the absolute sleep time it has calculated.
  • For instance, if a Sleep Time on a step is 5000 (5 seconds), the Sleep Time Multiplier on the User Journey is set to 2.0 (so now the step’s sleep time is 10 seconds), and the Sleep Time Variation is set to 20%, StressTester™ will, at random, wait for a time between 8 and 12 seconds (that is 10 seconds minus or plus 20%).
